For rehabilitation of beggars, Institutions have been set-up by the State Government for implementation of the provisions of The Prevention of Begging Act, 1959 within Municipal Corporation limits of bigger towns of the State.
On an offence of begging being proved, the beggar is liable for a sentence of imprisonment from a period of one year upto three years and is detained in the Beggars Home run by the Government.
The beggars admitted to such Homes are provided with food, clothes, medical treatment, mattress, education and training free of cost and wherever possible, attempts are made to rehabilitate them by contacting their family. Visitors Committees are constituted for every Beggars Admission Centre and Beggars Home as per provisions of section 14 of the said Act.
The prime objective of these Homes is to make the beggars economically self-reliant by giving them proper vocational training.
